Utilizing Songwriting as a Tool in the Classroom
Todd Herzog
8/13/2008 Wednesday 10:15 AM - 11:30 AM
Living/Learning Bldg. A, A101 [Subject to change. Check the daily Cajepage.]
Concepts and ideas found in scripture can often be difficult for students to comprehend and apply to their own lives. Music can be used as a tool to approach this subject matter from another side of the brain. We will look at a piece of text from Torah, discuss the concepts in the writing and then use the insights from our conversation to create a new piece of music. We will then go through a process of exercises and utilize two or more elements to create the seed of a new song idea. We will incorporate personal stories and experiences into the fabric of the composition so that the song becomes a reflection of who we are, thereby making the text real for us.
