Performing the New Jew: Warsaw's Yiddish Language and Berlin's German language and Cabarets and Their Resonance for Today's Youth.
Rebecca Joy Fletcher
8/13/2008 Wednesday 10:15 AM - 1:00 PM
Royall Tyler Theatre, Theatre (210) [Subject to change. Check the daily Cajepage.]
The session will begin with a presention about the Kleynkunst Theaters and the world of secular Yiddish Warsaw. I will then perform a few of the kleynkunst songs, in a mixture of English and Yiddish. Afterwards, using archival skits, songs, and jokes of the period, translated into English, we will work to develop original interpretations and performances. This interactive session culminate in small groups performing short cabaret pieces for each other, either using archival material or new material developed in the workshop, based upon material from the past and responding to the Jewish issues of today. If there is an opportunity, we will present some of these final skits for the entire conference community. No prior experience in theater or music required, only the desire to stretch your wings and encounter a thriving culture from the past.
